I can't say enough good things about Sandy Bottoms and Meakin and Sam our hosts.
My wife and I just returned from a week long stay, and we couldn't have been
more pleased with the home, the hosts, or the weather (not that they had anything
to do with that) Meakin is a retired stock broker, and his wife Sam is quite
the gourmet cook. They were always helpful with suggestions as to how to make
our stay more enjoyable, but never pushy. Meakin is a knowledgable boater, and
helped me with navigation tips, as well as helping me keep from making rookie
mistakes with the boat. As for rental locations for boats, we rented from
Seahorse, and were quite happy with the boat and service. One thing I did learn
from Meakin that I'll share is that a longer boat makes for a smoother ride. We
rented a "Privateer", and while there was nothing wrong with it, Meakin informed
me that a Boston Whaler, or any boat with a "deep vee" type hull cuts through
the choppier water more effectively and again makes for a smoother ride. We
went out in our 17 foot Privateer in 2-4 foot swells, and we got more than just
bit of water thrown in our faces, and we were jarred quite a bit as we made it
through the water. One last thing, you can bring CDs, and tapes, because they
have a stereo in the house. Bring a good book too, the rental boats aren't
permitted out after dark, and so the nights are fairly early. There is a
restaurant/bar on Lubbers, within easy walking distance. Yahoes Sand Bar, as
it is called, has good food, and drinks. Go and enjoy. Meakin and Sam will
help you any way they can.
