Jill, I expect this to blow away most of your other carribean snorkeling. I think only Cayman's are comparable. Mark suggests "eastern side of Guana" - obviously coming from a true sailor as he says "anchor .. and dingy over to the eastern side". That's the catch - While I've heard this reef is awesome, it is in the Atlantic (where most boat rental's won't allow you to go), and a good ways off shore. You might be told to snorkel where the reef is only 50ft off shore, but I and others found that to be kind of lifeless. So, unless your sailing and can dingy out to the reef, or SCUBA diving so that swimming 100 yards off shore is doable, there are some easier places. Sandy Cay Preserve (Pelican Cay? Not sure I have the name right, but there's no confusing this with the others). short ride south of Marsh Harbour (I think there's another Sandy Cay way north). Moorings provided for your boat. The BEST snorkeling I've seen so far. No beaches. Fowl Cay Preserve - south of Guana, almost connected to. It's very easy to boat up to the little cays (some are just large rocks) and anchor. Walk (3 foot deep) to the cays. Nice tiny beaches, good for picnic. Some small coral heads on the Sea side, but the real reef is across the cays/rocks and in the Atantic, about 25-50 foot from the cays. Problem with that is GETTING to that side. Lesson learned - you can't walk in flippers, and you can't walk barefoot over lava rock. Answer is Aqua Socks - GET A PAIR. Mermaid's Reef - right off of Marsh Harbour. Never been there, hear it's great. In Front of Hopetown Harbour Lodge - ditto. High on my list to get to as it combines the bar access like Nipper's on Guana, with a reef that is easier to get to.
