Two comments: Historically, in all areas of endeavour--not just dealings with government--the "Out Islands" euphemistically called "Family" have gotten the short, fuzzy end of the stick, IF it came this way at all. Money only flows one way in the Bahamas--toward the middle. After Hurricane Andrew, the people affected by the storm did not bother to wait for governmental aid, they knew the frustration of that sort of thing, so they just took care of business themselves.
Comment two: After Floyd unbelievable amounts of aid were offered and sent to Abaco, some specifically for Elbow Cay, from outside sources. For reasons known only to God most of it was refused, rerouted or got lost in the Bermuda Triangle. One of Abaco's best natural resources, its people, became unrecognizable, and all of the worst human traits burst out and took control of otherwise compassionate, sensible, caring people. Survival of the fittest took on a whole new meaning. No bodies died, no bodies were hurt; but noone has counted the dead and injured hearts and spirits. That's probably just as well, it wouldn't be good for tourism to crack the image. That's just my opinion, I'm probably wrong.
