As an avid free diver, I have been to all of the Hawiian islands and can tell you that the Bahimian waters are more clear than any in Hawaii. The reason is all of the Bahama islands are made of limestone and sand with little or no topsoil. There is also no elevation on any of the islands and thus no rivers. The lack of rivers and topsoil mean that there is little erosion and the erosion carries little topsoil or silt that causes turbidity in the water.

There is nowhere in the world that has better visibility and easy access to major reef structures than Hopetown. The Bahimian regluations banning spearguns and limiting spearing to at least 200 yards from shore has done a lot to keep the reef well stocked with life and in their natural state.

Abaco is my favorite free diving place and I love to bring rookies who are forever spoiled. Last year I brought my 15 year old nephew. This summer I took him to the Florida Keys and he said "The Keys suck". His comments are not a reflection on the Keys as they are a testimate to the Abaco reef system.
