My wife and I are looking into moving to the Carribean for a few years. We've taken our vacations for the past several years in the Carribean and always find it difficult to leave. After speaking with my acountant, he suggested having residency in a tax-free or tax-haven country. Bahamas seems like the most interesting country for me due to its proximity to Florida. So far the only place we've been to in The Bahamas has been Bimini. We sailed there on a bare-boat charter from Miami. We will be coming down next April tyring to visit Nassau, Freeport and Abacos to try and pinpoint an area we would like to live in. These are the 3 areas which interest us at the moment. Nassau due to its size and conveniences. However I am reading about crime, drug abuse etc. I like living in a place that I feel comfortable walking around in at night. Casinos etc do not interest me. However access to food markets, dependable electricity are an advantage. Schools are also important since we have a 4 year old daughter which will start school soon enough. Freeport seem to be the next possibility since I imagine it like a small city with many conveniences. Abacos is also appealling for the lack of Cruise ships etc. I was wondering if someone could tell me more about Abacos. I know about all the tourist activities etc. The info I really want is what is it like to live there year round. Are there decent grammar schools there? Is fresh water always readily available and potable. Is it easy to do your food shopping. Internet access. Are the people freindler the lets say Freeport. Do I need to worry about break ins and have security bars placed on all windows. (Seems to be a big selling point for places in Nassau), they mention it in many real estate ads. What keeps you in Abacos. What do you like the most about it. What do you find the most incovenient about living there. Thanks for any responses either directly to me at mikep@conceptis.com or on this message board.
