[ Follow Ups ] [ 1998 Abaco Message Board ]

In reading through all the messages posted here, I came across one that bothered me.
In part it read: " The rental companies have tight rules, but they are usually ignored by the
great majority of renters."
I do not know if this is true or not. I would like to hear what others who have rented think.
We have been renting boats/whalers/sailboats/speedboats from a variety of sources for a number of years. Maybe I am just a sisssie, BUT we have always been exceptionally careful to do and stay where they tell us.
We do this for several reasons:
First and foremost, we have heard about the numerous drownings that have occurred in and around the Sea of Abaco.
When these are related to us, either by locals or visitors who spend a lot of time there, the usual moral is, did not know local conditions, or how to properly anchor etc.
Second, we do not want to give visitors a bad name by returning a boat that has been damaged in any way, nor do we want to suffer the embarrassment of having to call and report "we are aground and beyond the limits you set for us."
We only visit for a week at a time, once or twice a year, but I can not remember a time when a boat has not been swamped/gone down while we were there. Granted these were mostly sailboats, but I think there is too much disregard of the true forces of nature.
Perhaps we need some nautical rules of the road as a permanent page here somewhere.

Please let me hear from others if you think I am too "prissy" in this regard.
