We're a second home owner on GTC for 28 years, and I would add that people who rent boats should be made aware of some basics of safety and courtesy. Three points I would add:
First, navigation lights on rental boats are typically non-existent -- please display a flashlight when travelling at night and realize there are likely other unlighted inflatables, etc. out there so don't run at a plane. We have had a number of dingys run down at night.
Second, do not allow people to sit on the bow of the boat with feet hanging overboard. A serious accident ocurred just off my dock in White Sound when such a boater fell into the water and run over by his boat (due to a wake from the ferry) -- causing deep cuts on his hands and body -- and the poor guy was a resident MD in surgery.
Third, when entering a harbor, throttle back to idle and let the bow drop entirely--after running on plane many renters pull back to half throttle and thereby create the maximum wake the boat can make --- you may be going slow but WATCH YOUR WAKE.
