For only a few weeks per year, don’t think I’d own either a boat or a cottage. Both boats and cottages are a lot of trouble and expensive, too. Once one is the proud owner of either a boat or a cottage, weekly cottage rentals and bareboat charters seem a marvelous way to go. With renting, one can skim the fun without enduring the difficulties and expense of absentee ownership. And you can mix it up and have it both ways by one year chartering a boat and the next year renting a cottage. Once you start staying for about three months per year, it makes sense to own a cottage. I’m not sure it ever makes sense to own a cruising boat (I’ve been there but am now content to crew on my friend’s boats, and they are always happy to find experienced crew.) In general, in both boat and cottage ownership, there is a lot more involved than the economics.
