This request for seemingly extraneous school supplies may seem out of line, but I'm sure all psychologists would agree that it is vitally important to get kids back into a normal routine following a disaster to restore their sense of security and take their minds off what they just went through. If focus on school activities will help and if the resources are available, then by all means I think this is appropriate.
