Tom did it very different than I, except for common love of duct tape. I considered the styrofoam cooler, but the ones I found are extremely fragile, and too big to carry on. They are convenient in that you can throw them away.

We packed way too much to carry on - we put frozen AND dry foods in the cooler. And since you're most likely checking luggage anyways, why not let the airlines do the carrying for you.

A 3rd option - soft pliable cooler bags. You can flatten them out and pack them with your clothes on the way back.
