SPRING FLING 2000
by Anna Côté

The long-anticipated annual ball of the Pilot Club of Abaco was held on 4th March at the Below Decks Ballroom of Abaco Beach Resort under the theme Restoration Celebration .

Highlights of the Spring Fling were the rousing antics of master of ceremonies Don Cornish and games masters Patty Toler and Leroy Thompson, and the warm speech given by president Veronica Edwards-Nairn. The theme message was brought by Maria Bethel of Cherokee Sound, wife of Senator the Honourable Michael Bethel. She expounded on the havoc wreaked by Hurricane Floyd and admonished her avid listeners to learn a lesson from the sound building codes of The Bahamas and to take heed of any weaknesses in hurricane preparedness to guard against the likelihood of tragic occurrences during the next hurricane season.

The meal was a triumph by Chef Dietmar Ubereich and his professional staff. There was a medley of hits from the past few decades by Geo the Leo and plenty of prizes, ranging from gift baskets to the grand prize of a trip for two on Continental Airlines won by Tossie Strachan. Another highlight was the red dot prize, when ladies and gents attired in the most elegant of formal wear could be seen rushing to the podium with chairs hoisted to show their dots and win prizes.

Part proceeds from the ball will be sent to Pilot International Headquarters in Macon, Georgia, to assist their efforts in raising funds towards brain research and the treatment of brain disorders. The Pilot Club of Abaco expects to host its next fund-raiser in May of this year, a movie premier at RND Cinema 3 in Marsh Harbour.
