°The peace and harmony of the Out Islands, set within the framework of an islander's everyday life, established the mood of this year's annual one-man art exhibition by Abaco artist Alton R Lowe. Abaco-built dinghies sailing past the Elbow Cay lighthouse in Hope Town, a man gathering coconuts for an ice cream dessert, and radiant florals join many other oil paintings in Alton LoweÕs 33rd consecutive show in Nassau at the Nassau Beach Hotel from 16th-20th March.
Scenes of Abaco, Harbour Island and Nassau reflect Mr Lowe's long-time interest in The Bahamas' colonial past. Paintings of roses, hibiscus, and village homes bring to life the wonderful uniqueness of the Out Islands.
Mr Lowe's long-time dedication to preservation is apparent throughout his exhibition, from his skillful depictions of nature to his life-like scenes of people involved in traditional work and play. The painting entitled Gonna Make Ice Cream
Mr Lowe was born on Green Turtle Cay, Abaco. His career spans more than three decades in which he has painted not only the flora and fauna of The Bahamas but many of the most famous buildings. Many of these paintings which grace the walls of private and corporate collections around the world, while others have been widely in use as Bahamian postage stamps for many years. The artist quickly established himself as a success following his education and training in Miami and New York City. Today, his home on Green Turtle Cay is also the site of the Lowe Art Gallery, where he holds public exhibitions throughout May and December. In New Plymouth one finds the
Lowe was also instrumental in the establishment of the Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden, also in New Plymouth. The Garden Theatre adjacent to Mr LoweÕs home continues to be the site of many performances including Christmas concerts, dance troupes, choral groups and live theatre.
A visit during the holiday season or the May and December art exhibitions are a must for both art lovers and those who are enamoured with the traditions and history of The Bahamas.
