ISLAND PLANTS

CORAL PLANT

For a combination of lacy foliage and bright reddish-orange flowers, it's hard to beat the Coral Plant (Jatropha multifida). It blooms during the warmer months of the year, taking a rest in winter. But even in winter, the delicate fern-like foliage makes it a highly desirable addition to a Bahamian garden.

The Coral Plant grows on a single trunk and can be used as a specimen planting, individually or in groups. It is an undemanding plant that needs little care once planted in full sun or light shade, but is not salt-tolerant.

The flowers of the Coral Plant give way to one inch diameter tricorn seed pods that turn from green to yellow. The mature individual seeds, planted just below soil level, quickly produce new plants.
