MARINER'S COVE MOMENTS
by Suzanne Young
At first glance, it appears there aren't many people at Treasure Cay, but with the
perfect weather this season the crowds have been on the beach, at the golf course,
on their boats or riding their bikes - or any other activities available at this
apparently sleepy village.
At Mariner's Cove, the Quinceys stay about the longest. If they're not killing everyone
on the tennis courts, they're probably on the beach, or Ralph is fishing. Gerry and
Marvel Moore also avoid the north as long as possible. Gerry looks great after his
quadrupal by-pass.
Just heard that Rochester NY is experiencing record snowfall and frigid temperatures.
How would you like to be Mac Beckwith putting up with that while Lucy is doing all
the good things under the sun? I'd say she's got the right idea. So does her brother
Herbert, and Patty, who have gorgeous suntans to prove it.
To celebrate the completion of their redecorating, the Ludenkas held one party outdoors
for everyone at Mariner's Cove instead of the many delicious dinners they've done
in the past.
Also enjoying the fruits of their labours are Dick and Vera Graham, who spent the
month of October completely renovating their condo.
Organised by Meredith Hashey and Nancy Quincy, the Mariner's Cove tennis tournament
raised almost $500 to benefit the Junior Programme of the Abaco Tennis Association.
These two gals have done a lot to encourage lots of tennis at Mariner's Cove.
Sandy and Breck Brown took a well earned vacation from their Hallmark stores in Roscoe,
IL. We're happy to see them return each year even though they are not owners - yet.
We enjoyed meeting their daughter and family, Brad and Terry Kemp with Adam, Kate
and Clayton. Also, Jennie Parsells came for a nice long visit with her sister-in-law,
Peggy.
Bill and Carol Cox, the perpetual honeymooners, have been coming here for about 18
years. They'll probably be coming here for 18 more, they love this island so much.
We were sorry Bill and Lorna Firstbrook had to abort their sailing trip to Eleuthera
when Bill picked up the bug that plagued some residents. But we've been happy to
see more of them. They did get in a short trip back to Canada to meet their new grand-daughter Megan Mary, daughter of son Don.
The Finellis and Greenspans had a reunion with their friends Paul and Marcia Merlo
from Minnesota.
All who knew Tom and Peggy Lardner are saddened by the sudden death of Tom's father,
appropriately known as Sonny. During his visits from Prince Edward Island he was
often helpful with the construction of the Lardner's home and became a good friend
of everyone who met him.
We all enjoy the pleasure of showing off our children and grandchildren, like Paula
Thompson Knowles, our manager. Her son Rosie is on his spring break from Bethune
Cookman College in Daytona Beach, not only to the delight of his mother but his niece,
Sabrina, who has been smitten by this handsome grown-up uncle.
If it were not for our Saturday night cocktail parties, we might not always meet all
the people who come and go and reside here. Bridget Cooleen is a teacher at S C Bootle
High School and we've been glad to get more acquainted with her at our poolside gatherings.
As well-informed about safety as we and our boating friends are, now and then a freak
wave can cause an incident that is unexpected. Caroline Kingsford was a victim of
one that caused her to be thrown, injuring her back. After a long period of recovery,
with her husband Pat learning the skills of a practical nurse, we are happy to see her
moving around like her old active self.
If you're between chores or just feel like visiting, you can often find Max Collins
and Ellie Anderson holding court on their patio.
Dick and Sheila Haag play tennis and do lots of bicycling, but they also continue
their contributions to the Treasure Cay community: Dick as a repair man and Sheila
as the unofficial hostess of Mariner's Cove. She sets up a table for our weekly cocktail
parties and any other occasion that comes along.
The Fred Zulaufs have a wedding to look forward to in November. Heidi Alexandra will
be married to Mike Cusick on the beach, as her sister was eight years ago.
The Passmans and the Kent Kellys are here for the annual meeting and to visit with
their Mariner's Cove friends. One who won't pass up an invitation to play bridge
is Jane Dixon, a busy gadabout.
Watching over all the activities, Ed and Nina Beaver have a vantage point from their
balcony apartment from which they see that all is well in Mariner's Cove.
