CHRISTIAN COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE
This is a press release by the Abaco Christian Council following a meeting on 20th
July to discuss a response to the Pigeon Pea situation.
As a result of reports on Radio Abaco on Monday 17th July concerning the demolition
of Pigeon Pea on August 31st, a meeting was called by a group of concerned pastors
to discuss this possible crisis.
The proposed intended action against the residents of Pigeon Pea cannot be carried
out because it would be a full slap in the face of democracy.
Mrs Yvonne Key and the members of the Marsh Harbour Town Committee cannot and will
not be allowed to run and use their office as a personal, individual domain.
As Christians we support the relocation of the residents of this area to a more suitable
location.
The meeting was well attended and the discussion was fruitful and productive. As a
result, several recommendations were made:
The committee will seek a meeting with the Marsh Harbour Township Committee to discuss
the Pigeon Pea problem.
The committee recommends that the proposed subdivision by the government be allowed
to be completed so as to allow a smooth transition from the Pigeon Pea area to the
new community.
All pressure tactics against the Haitian community should stop immediately as the
community is being traumatised, particularly the children.
The Christian community is offering its assistance in this exercise.
We are calling on the entire community of Abaco, both black and white, to unite and
foster love among our people.
Thank you and God bless you.
