NATIONAL NOTES
Another Knowles Final: Bahamian tennis player Mark Knowles and his Canadian partner Daniel Nestor reached their third grand slam final out of three this year. They had previously won the Australian Open and reached the finals of the French Open. They also reached the final match at Wimbledon before bowing out 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 7-5 to Todd Woodbridge and Jonas Bjorkman. Perhaps it was an oversight but NBC announcers mentioned the nationalities of all the players but Knowles. NBC appears to have an ongoing vendetta against The Bahamas and its athletes, never showing their team entries or interviewing their winners.
Aaliyah Enquiry: The Tribune of Nassau reported that investigators found traces of cocaine and alcohol in the stomach of pilot Luis Morales who was at the controls of the Cessna 402B which crashed at Marsh Harbour International Airport on 25th August 2001 killing all nine on board, including singer and actor Aaliyah. There were also indications that routine maintenance had not been performed on the aircraft.
Reginald Sands Resigns: Abaco Markets Ltd chief executive officer Reginald Sands resigned his position on 17th July in order to pursue private interests. Sands owns a $300,000 stake in the company and will remain on the board of directors and serve as a special consultant.
