Sick Out: If you did any business at Barclays Bank in Marsh Harbour on 1st July you probably saw longer lines than usual and some unfamiliar tellers. Only five staff were at work while seven others took part in a Barclays national sick out to protest lack of pay raises, overtime payments and back pay. Barclays Bank is due to merge with CIBC (Bahamas) Limited to form First Caribbean International Bank.
New Counsellors: For the third time Out Islanders voted for town committee members and regional counsellors. On Abaco all previous chief counsellors were replaced by the following: Central Abaco, Mike Malone (Cubell Davis, deputy); Grand Cay, George Russell (Calvin Albury); North Abaco, Hartman Cooper Jr (Steve Pedican); Hope Town, Walter Sweeting (Jeff Key); South Abaco, Jason Roberts (Netica Symonette); Mores Island, Lilian Laing (Ruthmae Davis-Rolle).
Tourist Dies: A 65 year old visitor to Green Turtle Cay succumbed to what is believed to be a heart attack on 14th July. John Tillman III of South Carolina had been snorkeling with family members at Manjack Cay when it was noticed that he was in distress. Mr Tillman was taken to the government clinic in New Plymouth where he was pronounced dead. The body was flown to Nassau for an autopsy.
Gotcha! Nine men, three Bahamians and six Haitians in three different boats, were arrested while using air compressors to dive up conch between Carters Cay and Spanish Cay. The conch was confiscated.
