NATIONAL NOTES
No Respect:
After winning both the 100m and 200m in the NCAA Championships in Buffalo, Debbie
Ferguson returned home to Nassau for the Bahamas National Open Championships. In
the 100m finals she was beaten into second place by Chandra Sturrup, who clocked
a national record time of 10.94, breaking her own previous record time of 11.00 seconds that she
set in 1996. Earlier this year, Chandra finished second in the World's Fastest Woman
race in China.
Customs Goal Reached:
The Bahamas Customs Department reached its record revenue goal of $500 million in
the fiscal year which ended 30th June. It was estimated the final figure would be
close to $520 million.
Warning to Video Store Owners:
Senator Desmond Edwards, who was one of the main drafters of the Copyright Act due
to come into effect later this year, warned owners of video stores that they may
be liable under the Act if they rent tapes that are not originals. The Copyright
Act was one of several adjustments in Bahamian law made to bring the country in line with NAFTA
requirements and the upcoming FTAA.
Deputy Prime Minister Collapses:
Deputy Prime Minister of The Bahamas Frank Watson collapsed during 25th Independence
anniversary celebrations at Clifford Park in Nassau. He was taken to Princess Margaret
Hospital where he remained for several days undergoing treatment for a heart condition.
Firework Display Highlights 25th Independence Celebrations:
A $100,000 firework display which was a gift by Sun International for the Bahamian
public took place in Nassau Harbour shortly after The Bahamas entered its 25th year
of independence. The display was put on through Fireworks by Grucci, a world-renowned
company that has provided the fireworks for five US presidential inaugurations.
