Independence Day Celebrations:
The 26th anniversary of Bahamian independence was celebrated throughout Abaco. Murphy
Town held its annual Homecoming celebrations starting on 8th July. Fire Road was
the place to be on 10th. A number of competitions took place and the fishing tournament
was won by the Baltron Curry-guided crew of Archie McDonald, Ronald Murray and Leslie
Rolle who caught 450 snappers. Over on Elbow Cay, Sea Spray Resort held a Goombay
festival on 10th July while Youth United of Abaco held rallies in Marsh Harbour and
Sandy Point. A gumelemi boat race that suffered from an extreme low tide on 12th July.
While Everette Hart and Roderick Bowe gave their crafts some sea trials, the serious
competition was left over until Monday 2nd August (Emancipation Day).
Doctor(s) for Sandy Point:
For the first time ever, Sandy Point has a resident doctor. Two, in fact. Dr Benerji
Swarna from India will be the resident doctor for three months. Dr Swarna has been
in The Bahamas for seven months, practising in Nassau, and has also spent six weeks
in Coopers Town as a substitute doctor. Dr Swarna's wife is also a doctor.and they have
a one-year-old son.
New Air Ambulance Service:
Dr Franklyn Walkine addressed some 20 members of the Abaco community in an introductory
presentation of Air Ambulance Services at Abaco Beach Resort on 16th July. He stressed
that AAS would be providing a service whereby the trained medical staff would go
to the patients and ensure stabilisation before taking them to the aircraft. The AAS
aeroplanes - two Navajo Chieftains - contain what Dr Walkine described as "a flying
intensive care unit" with a wide selection of portable equipment. The company began
operations in March of this year and caters to level one emergency services. A doctor
and two nurses accompany each flight.
