ROTARIAN INTERACT CLUB EXCHANGE
J Denise
Archer DDS
The Rotary Club of Abaco has begun an exchange programme with
the Rotary Club of Pontiac, Illinois, to exchange ideas and cultural habits
which should help students benefit their communities and also prepare them for
college. Students from Pontiac will come to Abaco under the same premises. The
Students from Pontiac are scheduled to come every June and the Bahamian students
will leave during the fall. Four students and two chaperones from Pontiac were
hosted by Bahamian homes two years ago. The exchange of Bahamian students to
Pontiac did not take place last year because of Hurricane Floyd. This year a
small group of two students, Keora Brown and Terrenique Pennerman, and myself as
chaperone visited Pontiac from 9th - 16th October. When we arrived it was cool
enough for us to wear our jackets - even gloves. After the second day it warmed
up into the 70's.
We set out from Abaco at 6 am and arrived at Pontiac at
3 pm. We visited dental offices, schools, a radio station, farms, banks, parks,
toured homes, went horse riding, attended a bonfire and had a zoo visit. We went
shopping in Chicago where we visited the Sears Tower, John Hancock Building,
Navy Pier and the Water Tower (a multi-storey shopping mall). Our last day was
spent in church with our host families. We were invited to speak about our
country and ourselves at several meetings. They reported us in several of the
local newspapers and included us on radio. Everybody was very friendly. One of
the girls was taken on a shopping spree by her host family.
