ABACO TOURIST OFFICE UPDATE
Wynsome Ferguson

Margaret Bodchon of SunWard Tours Inc, of Cape Canaveral FL, visited Abaco !st -3rd Abaco. This company has been in business for five years and has operated as a receptive ground operator in the past mainly with Norwegian Caribbean Lines assisting cruise passengers with trips to Disney, etc. They are for the first time venturing as a wholesaler to an offshore destination. They were approached by Melbourne Airport and Vintage Airlines to develop packages to the Out Islands using a 9-seater aircraft. Mrs Bodchon visited Abaco Beach Resort, Treasure Cay Beach Hotel, Bluff House Resort and Green Turtle Club with hopes of including them in this programme.

A fam trip for Kuoni and Airtours out of Germany took place October 18th-19th. A total of 12 persons participated in this fam and were assisted by me. Upon arrival at Marsh Harbour International Airport they had the opportunity to join in the celebrations for the Golden Girls, the Bahamian gold medalists in the Sidney Olympic Games. In addition, they conducted site inspections of hotels in Harsh Harbour and Hope Town.

Bob Friel, editor of Caribbean Travel and Life, arrived in Abaco on 19th October and stayed until 25th October. He was here to do an update for their upcoming issue. Friel was hosted to dinner by Nettica Symonette of the Out Island Promotion Board, Nick Watson who is General Manager of Abaco Beach Resort, and myself. He is sailing the Abacos via a yacht from Florida Yacht Charters. During his sail he will visit Hope Town, Man-O-War, Guana Cay, Treasure Cay and Green Turtle Cay.

Dion Strachan, president of the Bahamas Hotel Association, along with John Deleveaux, Basil Smith and Germaine Burnside, were in Abaco to make presentations to ten persons from Crossing Rocks who lost their homes during Hurricane Floyd. This all became possible as a result of Nettica Symonette making the request. A church service was held at St Marks Baptist Church, followed by the presentation and then a reception with food and drinks. The ten persons were presented a certificate for either a refrigerator or a stove. In attendance were Senator Michael Bethel, Island Administrator Benjamin Pinder, Town Committee Chairman Alice Williams, Nettica Symonette and myself.
