NATIONAL NOTES
Sad to report, but...
At the time of going to press there have been 56 killings during 1999 in The Bahamas.
51 of them occurred in Nassau. Crime seems to be the biggest problem the present
government faces. Religious and political leaders are seemingly at odds as to how
to contain the new level of violence that has left our capital city with an unenviable record.
Nobody in The Bahamas is outside of this situation, with prominent businessmen and
even a highly placed politician, as well as winter home owners and residents, being
victims of murder that seems so foreign to the wonderful climate and lifestyle that
is perceived by both visitors and most Bahamians.
Oh no, not again...
The Bahamas has once again been added to the US government's list of suspect drug
countries. The US Ambassador, Howard Schecter, earlier noted that the level of conviction
and sentencing in The Bahamas does not deter young Bahamians from involving themselves in the practice of drug running. The list includes 26 countries and territories
that are involved in drug transit to the US.
Trees for New Providence:
Ten thousand trees and palms will be bought by government from a Florida source at
a cost of $2 million to help beautify New Providence and replace trees lost to Hurricane
Floyd. Trees will also be bought from local sources.
