HURRICANE FLOYD
A poem in the vernacular
by Alexis Gay

Hurricane is coming, you better batten down
People everywhere shopping, buying food downtown
The wind picking up, blowing the sea with rage
This hurricane coming in the highest stage

Young children crying, the wind giving them a scare
Grown up people smiling, desperately hiding their fear
The whole house darkens as the shutters go up
We all need a miracle to make this hurricane stop

The wind was blowing and howling loud
The whole big sky was one black cloud
Shingles and plywood, flying in the air
Raindrops falling heavily everywhere

After the hurricane pass, we took a drive downtown
Trees fell on houses, boats turned upside down
So much devastation everywhere you look
Disasters like this, you only read of in a book

We are all glad this hurricane passed
Another two more hours, nothing would have last
Everyone is safe, but still are shaken with fear
We'll always remember that day when Hurricane Floyd was here.
