We're back - And we're better than ever!
A Little More Time:
Government has extended the duty-free exemption on hurricane loss goods from November
15th to December 15th. Twelve months have been allowed for the import of duty-free
building materials.
Rotary Helps Out:
Rotarians of Abaco, led by president George Riviere, helped construct a new home on
13th November for Mary Roberts, 90, of Dundas Town whose previous home had been extensively
damaged by Hurricane Floyd. Mrs Roberts had spent the storm period in a hurricane shelter and Social Services was paying over $1,000 a month in care facilities. Everybody
involved is happier now, thanks to the Rotary Club of Abaco. (Please note that Radio Abaco has been out of action for several weeks following Floyd
and has not been able to report every kind action of this nature. There have been
many and this is typical of them.)
Bellevue Break-In:
Thieves entered Bellevue Business Depot on Don MacKay Boulevard, Marsh Harbour, during
the night of 11th-12th November and removed a safe. According to Bellevue, the company
records in the safe were of far greater value than the cash. Police are investigating.
Sandy Point Recovering:
In an interview with Radio Abaco News, Chief Councillor for South Abaco, Stanley White,
said that the citizens of Sandy Point were working hard to overcome the effects of
Floyd and were making sure progress to normality. Sandy Point was one of the hardest
hit areas, suffering flooding up to six feet. Relief building supplies were on hand
at Snake Cay, said Chief Councillor White, but transportation to Sandy Point, some
50 miles away, was proving a problem.
Scotiabank Promotion:
Courtney Strachan Chandler, the present Scotiabank, Marsh Harbour, Employee of the
Year, has been promoted to Assistant Operations Manager at Rock Sound, Eleuthera.
School Awards Day:
Abaco Central High School held its annual Awards Day presentations on 17th November.
Students with GPAs of 3.5 and above were presented with the Principal's Award while
those with GPAs from 3.0 to 4.9 received Honour Roll badges. There were also subject
and effort certificate awards. The guest speaker was Pastor Earlin Baillou, who spoke
on daring to be different. It was noted that fully three-quarters of the recipients
of the awards were girls.
New Tourist Office Manager:
Don Cornish has been appointed Manager of the Abaco Tourist Office with effect from
1st December. Mr Cornish looked forward to a warm and productive relationship with
product partners. He also hoped to be able to accentuate the culture and history
of Abaco. Mr Cornish was previously Secretary to the Central District Council.
