GREEN TURTLE CLUB UPDATE
We are pleased to announce that the mammoth task of putting all the pieces back together
has been a success and The Club is back!
Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our general manager, Lynn Johnson, and resort
managers Tim and Meredith Hoffman, and Mr Everything Ray Lowe, who were always willing
to go that extra mile to get the job done; to long-time employees Vertrum Lowe and Erkie McIntosh, who continued to work every morning when their own homes were severely
damaged; to office manager Linda McIntosh, who was always so optimistic, even when
there was no office; to Jennifer Sawyer for just being Jennifer and who always managed to answer the phone amidst all the debris in such a pleasant manner; to executive
chef Michael Howell, who found an occupation (roofing in the tropics!) that is as
hot as the kitchen; to dive operator Mark Knowles, who had to trade in his dive tanks
for a hammer and chain saw; to dockmaster Oliver Bethel, Warren Johnson and Rodney Curry,
who demonstrated their versatility by becoming such a great construction team without
boats or a marina; to Ellie Brooks and his famous chicken souse Friday lunch breaks; and to the rest of the Green Turtle Club staff who continued to hang in there in
such a trying time.
Special thanks go out to Green Turtle Cay's local builders Reggie Sawyer and Wade
Cash and their talented work crew who have made it all possible for the re-construction
of the resort and marina respectively; the the architectural designs of multi-talented US Air captain Syd Curtis (who also plays a mean Fender Strat); to the many hours
and after hours of electrical work performed by locals Donnie Adderley and Omri McIntosh;
to Tony Lockhart and his hard-working team of Kentucky Wildcats; to West Palm Beach's Claire Thomas, Thomas Hauersperger and Richard Tiffin, who were willing to come
out and lend their considerable talents and a moment's notice; to the carpentry skills
of Ben and Dan Fasset of upstate New York; to Lighthouse Point's Ken Batzer, who
helped to get us much needed roofing material as soon as the airport re-opened; to Fort
Lauderdale's Maureen Anstey and all her fund raising efforts not only for our Pat
and Louise Fund but also for Abaco in general; to Pete Pelaez of RTI Hotel Supply,
whose last minute heroics enabled us to serve dinner in a carpeted dining room; to Axel of
Carib Air, who flew out our oriental rugs on Christmas Day; and to all of our friends
for their support and encouragement.
The Green Turtle Club has been significantly improved and refurbished with an all-new
patio restaurant and kitchen, reconstructed reception, bar and dining rooms, and
re-furbished pool rooms. An all-new dive and marina centre is scheduled for completion
in mid February. The new marina is on target for a late February opening with cable
television and 30/50/100 amp power for the cruising yachtsman.
Executive chef Michael Howell, who joined the Green Turtle Club just weeks before
the hurricane, is already receiving critical acclaim for his fusion of local seafood
with French, American and Bahamian cuisine.
Dive operator Mark Knowles has taken over the Green Turtle Club Divers, a PADI International
Resort member and NAUI Dream Resort, and is offering a wide variety of specialty
courses courses from PADI Bubblemakers for children to blue hole diving for experts. His pet nurse shark Bandit is a featured attraction.
The Green Turtle Club has taken steps to deal with telephone difficulties calling
into The Bahamas and can now easily be reached for reservations at 1-877-207-6671,
1-800-254-2617 for fax/voice messages, 1-242-365-4271 and e-mail at greenturtleclub@oii.net.
The Club is back - even better than ever!
