RADIO ABACO NEWS

Fox in Charge of Chicken Coop: A man, said to be an employee of a local shipping company, was held for questioning by police. Items missing from Marsh Harbour Dock were discovered in a rental space facility.

Look at the Lucre! On 20th December 1999 the Central Bank of The Bahamas warned the public about counterfeit bank notes circulating in the capital. In the second week of January some of this funny money started to appear at business places on Abaco, mainly $100 and $5 bills. Marsh Harbour police urged the public to inspect all bank notes received. "If you look closely, you can tell it's a fake." The texture of the counterfeit notes is thinner, the Santa Maria watermark is missing and there is no line in the corner.

Pond to be Resurrected? After a public outcry against the partial filling in of a natural pond on Forest Drive during construction of the Central Pines Estate sub-division, construction chief Sonny Waugh said that his company did not know the pond was there and the filling in was inadvertent. He promised to have the pond re-established as part of a storm storage area. He also said that tree clearing was complete except in the case of land levelling, roadways and whatever trees would be removed by lot owners.

Where Are the Lights? Central Abaco Council looked into the matter of road traffic lights that had been agreed upon before the new council took office. They found that the person responsible for the exercise had been transferred to another ministry. David Pratt of the Ministry of Works said that the process was in hand again and traffic lights should be appearing in the Marsh Harbour area by mid February. He noted that instead of full green-amber-red lights there may be places where a flashing warning light would do the job.

Dundas Town Fire Engine: Dundas Town now has its own fire engine which will complement the Marsh Harbour Volunteer Fire Department equipment in combating fires in the district. During May 1999 Radio Abaco received pledges for a fire engine totalling over $20,000, of which a little over $14,000 was received. The 1973 fire truck, which holds 750 gallons of water, was purchased in Virginia for $10,000 and brought over free of freight charges by The Duke of Topsail .

New Bahamasair Team: Marsh Harbour's Frederik Gottlieb has been appointed chairman of the beleaguered national flag carrier Bahamasair. Mr Gottlieb was formerly chairman of the Water and Sewerage Board and has served as member of parliament for south Abaco. Casuarina Point's Nettica Symonette was appointed as a board member. Bahamasair general manager Paul Major held meetings with Abaco staff on 14th January. He reminded the employees that Bahamasair was a company and not a corporation, and as such was one of the largest in The Bahamas with earnings of $80 million a year. He urged staff members to live up to the new motto: Serving You With Care at Bahamasair.

Damaged Docks Discussed: The Central Abaco District Council examined and discussed the condition of public docks on 14th January and passed on their recommendations and estimates to the Ministry of Works. The three docks involved were the Union Jack dock, the Public Dock in Marsh Harbour and the South Side dock. All of them had been severely damaged by Hurricane Floyd.

What, MY money? No Way! Philip Albury, proprietor of the Texaco Qulaity Star service station in Marsh Harbour, was approached by an armed gunman as he closed his business on 14th January. The gunman, who was masked, demanded money. Mr Albury was already in his truck and moving by the time the gunman approached. "I don't have any money!" he called and then accelerated away from the area. A shot was heard. Mr Albury drove straight to the Police Station in Dundas Town and reported the matter. A bullet hole was found in the truck. Police have advised all businessmen who close late to take precautions against such incidents. Businessmen can call the police for protection if they wish.
