ABACO TOURIST OFFICE UPDATE
by Wynsome Ferguson
The Abacos fared extremely well during the changeover from 1999 to 2000. Fears about
possible communications and security problems on the eve of Y2K abated early as the
year came without incident or adverse circumstance. Don Cornish, Office Manager,
was on standby on VHF and cellular phone at the office between 11 pm and 2 am to assist
with the Tourism Task Force efforts in this regard. The Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht
Club and Patty Toler of Cruisers Net assisted with two emergency communications networks
which were designed to respond to any adverse situations. Thanks were extended to them
on behalf of the Ministry.
The Abaco Tourist Office is pleased that Kenny Long of Long's Landing Marina, Marsh
Harbour, has kindly consented to allow dinghy boat docking at his marina free of
charge. The public Union Jack Dock, which met this need, was severely damaged by
Hurricane Floyd.
Major reconstruction of Abaco facilities continues on schedule. Abaco Beach Resort
and Boat Harbour cancelled their leg of the Wahoo Tournament set for January 2000.
They anticipated the facility having 32 rooms operational by 1st February. The marina
would also be operational by that date. Pelican Beach Villas is expected to be ready by
March 2000. Three units are presently back in operation. Abaco Towns by the Sea is
closed and undergoing extensive improvements and renovation. Their projected operational
date is 1st April 2000.
The Abaco Tourist Office employees attended the monthly cocktail reception hosted
by the Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht Club on 11th January at the Jib Room, Marsh Harbour.
This club has been in existence for some 20 plus years and has a membership of some
300 plus. Office Manager Don Cornish thanked the group for choosing Abaco as their home
away from home. In addition, he personally thanked them for their assistance to the
Abaco Tourist Office during the Y2K alert and stated that the office looks forward
to continue working with them. The Commodore of the Yacht Club is Mr Don Vanbeck.
Skip Stearns, inspector for the Small Treasurers Program, along with Meagan Blake
of ISM and pilot Tom Jones, visited Abaco from 14th - 16th January. The purpose of
their trip was to do an inspection of Dolphin Beach and Guana Seaside Village with
a view to including them in the Small Treasurers Program.
