TREASURE CAY DEATH
Abaco recorded its first traffic fatality for 2001 when Mort Kaplan of Royal Palm Condominiums died on the evening of 7th January when his car ran into the back of a school bus, believed to be on church duty, which had broken down. Mr Kaplan was on his way to the Green Turtle Cay ferry dock when the accident happened shortly after 6.20 pm.
Mr Kaplan of Sioux City, Iowa, was one of a party of nine Treasure Cay residents heading to Green Turtle Cay for a birthday dinner at Bluff House. The front hood of Mr Kaplan's Buick station wagon went under the bus and part of the roof on the driver's side was ripped off. It is believed that Mr Kaplan Kay, and another woman, Mrs Gifhorn, were not seriously hurt but Mr Gifhorn received injuries and was flown to Nassau for treatment. His wife accompanied him.
