TROPICAL FRUIT & GARDEN SOCIETY OF ABACO
The Tropical Fruit and Garden Society of Abaco held its second meeting of the year at the Anglican Church Hall in Marsh Harbour on 11th January. They were treated to a slide presentation by Lynn Gape, Public Relations and Education officer for the Bahamas National Trust, on birds and butterflies of The Bahamas.
In addition to the wonderful and instructive slides, Lynn gave pointers on what plants to grow to attract both birds and butterflies and how to feed them with man-made devices.
Lynn Gape pointed out how many species of birds there were on Abaco, some of them quite rare outside of the island. She mentioned Woody Bracey of Treasure Cay's identification of the Kirtland's warbler in south Abaco. On the butterfly side a common visitor to Abaco gardens, the Atala Hairstreak, is con in the world.
The next meeting of the Society will be held at the 'Breezy Hill' residence of President Shirley Higgs at 10 am on Saturday 10th February. Breezy Hill is located on Pelican Shores just before the Jib Room on the left. The speaker will be David Higgs from Nassau and he will speak on 'Introduction to Orchids'. The Society had several new members at the January meeting and looks forward to many more in February. If you interested in orchids in particular or tropical gardening in general, feel free to attend the meeting as a visitor or prospective member.
