ABACONIANS HONOURED

Eleven Abaconians were recognised in the Queen's New Year Honour list out of a total of 40 for The Bahamas.

Awarded the OBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Civil Division) was South Abaco MP Robert Sweeting for outstanding contribution to the community.

MBE's (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Civil Division) went to Roosevelt Curry, president and director of Island Bay Front Ltd for his contribution to the growth and development of the construction industry of The Bahamas; Michael Levarity, a member of the Green Turtle Cay Foundation and past member of the North Abaco Board of Works and the Green Turtle Cay Town Committee, for outstanding service as a contractor and builder; Roswell Sawyer, who for 51 years owned and operated a fishing business and also served as president of the New Plymouth Historical Society, for his contribution to the development of the fishing industry and his community involvement; and Bishop Archilaus Cooper JP, district overseer and pastor of the Church of God in Abaco for long and devoted service to the community.

The British Empire Medal (Civil Division) went to: Dr Allen Mills, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Cedar Harbour, who served as local district constable and postmaster for 35 years, for his involvement in the civic and religious community; Rev Samuel Sands, retired pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Sandy Point for his contribution to religious and community development; Joseph Norris, land surveyor and realtor, who is Chief Councillor for North Abaco, for his community development; Rev Copeland Morley of Dundas Town, for his outstanding contribution to the religious community of Abaco; Rev Roland Swain JP, who serves as pastor of Friendship Tabernacle in Dundas Town, for his years of dedicated service to the community; and Mrs Terry Marylyn Laing-Russell, who has served in the post office at Treasure Cay for the past 28 years and is president of the Treasure Cay School Parent Teachers' Association, for dedicated community service to the public.

The Queen's Police Medal (QPM) went to Assistant Superintendent of Police Leeland Russell for outstanding and meritorious service to the Force.
