NATIONAL NOTES

Whales Now Safe: The US Navy has agreed that powerful mid-range sonar employed during exercises near Andros on 15th and 16th March 2001 were probably responsible for the death of seven whales. A total of 17 whales were beached on Abaco, Grand Bahama and Eleuthera. Ten were returned to the sea. The Navy apologised to the government of The Bahamas and made assurances that no further sonar training exercises would be held in the area.

It's Better... It really is better in The Bahamas according to figures for 2001 produced by the Royal Bahamas Police Force. Crime was down 17% overall with murder decreasing by 42%. Armed robbery fell by 38%, robbery by 21% and attempted robbery by 60%. Housebreaking, shopbreaking and attempted breaking were down by 24%, 26% and 34% respectively but burglary showed an increase of 40%.

Rough Justice: The Tribune of Nassau reports that on 19th January a 27 year old man pulled a 16 year old girl into an abandoned building and raped her. The girl managed to escape and attract some bypassers. They apprehended the suspected rapist and dealt him some rough justice. By the time police arrived the man had been badly beaten, suffering a broken arm.

Another Sports Success: Mark Knowles of The Bahamas wrote another chapter in the amazing series of successes achieved by Bahamians in the world theatre of sports by partnering Canadian Daniel Nestor to the Men's Doubles Grand Slam title in the Australian Open in Melbourne in January.
