The Royal Bahamas Police Reserves conducted a spelling bee for primary schools on Abaco and an essay competition for secondary schools during the past school term. On 18th January an awards ceremony was held at Central Abaco Primary School with Commissioner of Police Paul Farquharson in attendance.
In his address to the dignitaries, students and parents the Commissioner, in a very informal and humorous way, told of his early days and the hardships he had to overcome to achieve success. He hoped that the young people present would use him as an exemplar and be determined to succeed.
Racquel Smith of Abaco Central High School read her winning essay, the second time she has done this as she also won the inaugural competition. The subject was The justice system is too lenient on juvenile offenders in The Bahamas and Racquel eloquently appealed for much stricter initial penalties.
Results:
Primary Spelling Bee: 1 Winsome Laroda, Treasure Cay Primary; 2 Archelus McDonald, Coopers Town Primary; 3 Taj Anderson, Treasure Cay Primary.
