GARDENING
by Jack Hardy
Well, if you are not literally reaping the rewards of your labours right now, you've
missed the best part of the growing season. Home gardeners should be wheeling their
trolleys past the supermarket produce section with an air of superiority.
It's been a great year for tomatoes, eggplants, sweet peppers and most other veggies.
My spinach failed, probably because of the warm weather back in November, but everything
else is doing well. Don't forget to plant new tomato seeds when the first plants
flower. This way, you will have successive crops throughout the growing season.
This is a good time of year to establish small perennials and bulbs in your garden.
Try Caladiums for lightly shaded areas. The large leaves can be of conservative white
and green or you can choose those that are red to produce a gaudy tropical effect.
If your soil is sandy, try growing watermelons. They need a lot of fertilizer but
otherwise are easy to grow.
Bedding plants that will last on into the summer months include Blue Daze, Petunia,
Gazania, Transvaal Daisy, Vinca and Mexican Heather.
