Teacher Charged With Manslaughter: On 19th
September Shawn Evans, 12, an 8th grade student at S C McPherson School in
Nassau, died after being disciplined by a teacher. On 30th November a coroner's
court jury returned a 6-1 verdict of death caused by pre-existing conditions
aggravated by unlawful and unauthorised force against Religious Studies teacher
Roslyn Astwood, 48. She was released on $1,000 bail. The verdict led to
disruption in many schools as teachers went on a work-to-rule status in support
of Mrs Astwood.
International Business Companies Act:
Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham told the House of Assembly that the
implementation of the International Business Companies Act will significantly
reduce a more than $20 million revenue source. "There is no doubt in my mind
that the amount of revenue which the government receives from IBC's will be
reduced. Certainly that is the case in the short term. And, of course, the
reduced amount of revenue for the government has to necessarily translate into
reduced expenditure." 16,910 IBC's registered in The Bahamas pay a fee of $250
in January for each year they exist.
