TREASURE CAY MARINA COMPLETES DREDGING
Treasure Cay Hotel Resort & Marina is celebrating the completion of its marina dredging project. The dredging has been completed on 2,000 feet from the marina, past the fuel station, to the entrance of the channel. The channel itself can now accommodate a six foot draft vessel at normal low tide. In addition to the dredging improvements, new daybeacons have been erected to ensure safe passage through the channel.
The project commenced last spring when a vessel from Bahamas Marine, Nassau, began operations using a large barge with a torpedo punch and dredge line. A test area of 60' x 60' was punched out with a six and a half ton steel torpedo. The torpedo was hoisted 50 feet in the air and allowed to free fall into the sea bottom. Loosened rock was removed and deposited onshore past the seawall. Full scale dredging operations commenced once the area was tested and the procedure was determined successful.
In response to increased activity in the channel the Texaco fuel station has arranged for their tanker to moor near the seawall, just before the fuel dock. The dock area has been expanded by approximately 100 feet to allow for easy fueling of up to three medium-sized vessels.
