EDITORIAL

A happy and prosperous New Year to all of our readers, subscribers and advertisers.

Abaco is burgeoning, bursting at the seams in certain places. Corporations such as BEC, Water & Sewerage and BaTelCo are hard pressed to keep up with our expanding needs, but are addressing the situation.

Land sales are at an all time high. It seems everyone who comes here and experiences the real Abaco wants to stay, or at least have a part of what we have. Will there ever be a time when the Ôforruners' living here exceed the natives? It could happen. (Make your own allowance for Nassau and other people being considered foreign.)

But will it be bad? At one time the theory was that the world's population would increase exponentially until it was unable to feed itself. The latest UN figures seem to indicate the world's population will level off at about 9.4 billion by the year 2050. This is an eminently sustainable figure, allowing for the technological provisions that should be made in the next half century. It also indicates that very many more people will be wanting their special place away from home.

In the light of such prognostications, Abaco sits pretty. The time will come when the issue of too much foreign ownership will have to be addressed by the government of the moment. Until that time The Bahamas in general, and Abaco in particular, looks like one of the very best second home ownership values in the world. Whatever the price.
