FAMILY GUARDIAN INCREASES SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

Family Guardian Insurance Company's chairman, Norbert Boissiere, today announced an increase in the company's annual scholarship award to the College of The Bahamas. Beginning in 1999, Family Guardian will make an annual award of $20,000 to the College to assist deserving Bahamian students in their pursuit of further education.

Since 1988, Family Guardian has awarded $10,000 annually to the College of The Bahamas to assist students in achieving their associate degrees. Students are selected by the College based on Family Guardian's requirements that they meet a specified minimum grade point average and represent both New Providence and the Family Islands. Over the past ten years, the company has made awards to forty-six students. In April of this year the College notified Family Guardian of an increase in tuition fees, and the company made the decision to double its annual award in 1999.

Family Guardian recently hosted a get-together at its Corporate Centre to meet the new president of the College, Dr Leon Higgs, and the five 1998/9 recipients of the company's scholarship award. This year's recipients are Gwendolyn Rolle (Nursing); Letisha Ashe (Law & Criminal Justice; Ryan Russell (Electrical Engineering); and Gerard Douglas (Pre-Engineering). Gamino Wilson (Data Processing) was a 1997/8 recipient and continues his studies with assistance from Family Guardian. Also attending the function was Miss Cheryl Carey, Director of Financial Aid at the College, who was thanked for her continued interest in and management of Family Guardian's scholarship programme.

Anne Higgs, Vice President of Public Relations & Human Resources at Family Guardian remarked: "We at Family Guardian are committed to playing a significant role in the education of our country's youth. The increase in our annual award underscores our commitment towards this goal. We have enjoyed meeting many of the recipients and following their academic careers. It is a pleasure to work with the College and we congratulate the staff and students on their excellent achievements and continued high standards."
