We enjoyed some absolutely magnificent gardens over there and hope to produce some new varieties for the villa gardens. Eric has added a new member to his gardening crew. We now have Eric II as well as Toni and Solie. They have kept things in good shape considering the winds which accompanied Mitch and some of the other storms, which luckily didn't hit our place in the sun, but did make lots of extra work. As usual, there have been plenty of comings and goings. The Lotts, Pegrams, Cognettas, Bachelor, and Betsy Pfeiffer had all left by the time we returned. We are happy Bob Birdsong survived some life-threatening surgery and do hope they manage to come down for a while - the cats miss them. The Fehrenbachs, Bishops, Lewis and Breretons are all late but the Momms are due and are driving a new car to Florida, thence via freightèer to here. Pat Gray had a busy time golfing, bridging and beaching with house guests from Montreal and now is making preparations for her family to visit at Christmas. You should see her lights! Keats Whitcraft and Jenny McInroy are as brown as berries and Doris Leeker and her daughter have just left, all made good use of the wonderful sunshine. We were delighted to see Bill and Francine Durrell who dragged themselves away from their lovely home in Quebec to come down to slave at boats, vehicles and to visit their many friends. The Guions have accumulated gorgeous tans but were disappointed when Duplicate Bridge was cancelled one night. There is a happy piece of not-so-new news. Peg and Charlie Morgan have rejoined the villa owners. They sold to us, the Birds, six year ago and now have come back - couldn't live without us. New owners, Pierre and Judith LaBarge from St. Louis, MO, have replaced Al and Genevieve Smith. They have added a comfortable screen porch to the villa and we wèish them many happy times there. Dr Homsey has sold his villa to Bea and Dewey and another friend of theirs so they are working to refurbish it. Peg and Dean McGrath filled four villas with children and grandchildren who were here for Thanksgiving. Peter Maase is riding around checking up on the gardeners and it is great to see him so well. There is a lot of banging in our area this year. Quite a few villa owners are re-roofing, some long overdue. Waiting until summer winds and torrential rains force ones hand can be a costly procrastination. Ask anyone who had delayed too long and then had to deal with collapsed ceilings, damaged walls, rotten timbers and whatever other problems major leaks can produce. The use of a specific style of fibreglass asphalt shingles is BVOA approved and their appearance is in keeping with the appearance of the original cedar shakes. The fact that the shingles are fire resistant and have a forty year guarantee makes them popular and is a bonus. A voluntTeer group using fire hoses and low water pressure in the case of a fire will be greatly assisted if this trend continues. Many hot water tanks are approaching the point of no return. A few leaked all over inside villas during the past year. When replacing them, try to instal them outside your villa thus avoiding a soggy mess and perhap lifted tiles. Question - why does no one use glass lined tanks? These prohibit electrolysis and rust and were in common use in Canada. I wonder if they are still available. Here's hoping the last year of the millennium is a healthy and happy one for all.
