ABACONIAN IN QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY HONOURS
Abaco's Robert Lucien Stratton was honoured in the Queen's Birthday List with the
British Empire Medal for dedicated service to the island of Abaco.
Mr Stratton was born in Marsh Harbour in 1918. As a youth he worked in construction
in Miami. He returned to Marsh Harbour and acted as a radio operator before undertaking
medical missionary work in dentistry. He served with the US forces during World War
II and practised dentistry from 1946 to 1950.
Mr Stratton then went into the crawfish export business and acted as manager for James
Crockett's farms. The Sea Breeze hardware store and construction company took up
much of his time from 1955 on. To this day the roads and airports built by Sea Breeze
throughout The Bahamas are remembered as models of engineering excellence. Sea Breeze
also created the infrastructure for the old Diamond Crystal salt complex on Long
Island.
Mr Stratton has long been known to the people of Abaco as 'Mr Lucien'. He is a member
of the Brethren Church and was a pioneer of the Marsh Harbour Sailing Club.
