ABACO DISTRICT SCOUTS
by Huel Moss

The Boy Scouts of America, Florida National High Adventure Sea Base, brings hundreds of American Scouts to Abaco for week-long camps. They will be working with the local Scouts of Abaco again this year.

At a recent press conference, Richard Canefield and Kirby Crocker of Florida Sea Base, along with Assistant Commissioners of Scouts in Abaco, Huel Moss Jr, Drexel Major and Fr Hugh Chapman, announced that Scout Leader Joel Reckley of the 3rd Abaco Scout Troop and Anwar Reckley of the 5th Abaco Scout Troop will be travelling to Philmont, New Mexico, for seven days of training and camping. Some of the skills they will take part in are mountain climbing, canoeing, river rafting and sky diving. They were both offered the scholarships by Florida Sea Base as a gesture of goodwill and the brotherhood of scouting throughout the world and also to advance the course of Scouting in The Bahamas, especially Abaco. Joel and Anwar will leave for New Mexico on 19th July.

Again this year, the two organisations will be collaborating on several local projects. The Sea Base group will be working with the 3rd Abaco Scout Troop out of Green Turtle Cay on a clean-up project there. There will also be a clean-up project at the Crossing Beach, along with volleyball and other games. Some of our local Scouts will be acting as ambassadors, meeting and greeting the American Scouts as they arrive during the ten week summer period.

The Scout Association of The Bahamas, Abaco District, thank the Florida High Adventure Sea Base, Capt Richard Canefield and Kirby Crocker for their thoughtfulness, care, interest and co-operation in making the dreams of many young people a reality.
