INTERIOR DESIGN
by Barbara Farnan
Dear Barbara,
The only place in our bedroom for our king size bed is on the wall with a
window which is off center. The window is about three quarters of the
width of the headboard. What can I do to make the bed and window look
balanced?
Karen Grossman.
Dear Karen,
One solution to making the bed look balanced is to have draperies made
which go from wall to wall behind the headboard. This conceals the actual
placement of the window and makes the centred bed look balanced in the
room. The draperies can be designed to have only the side with the window
to draw open, so you can still have a window view sometimes and the wall is
concealed behind the stationary drapery.
Another idea is to do some trompe l'oeil - a French word meaning to create
a visual deception - in which the drawing is in such fine detail as to create
an illusion of reality. The window treatment could be shutters on one side
of the window and painted shutters on the wall on the other side. It would
give the illusion of the wall shutters being closed when the other side is
open.
A third idea would to make the window treatment of two flat sliding
screens. This would resemble sliding glass doors. One would overlap the
other. The screen would be centred on the wall. The size of the screens
could be the whole wall or just enough to cover the window and wall to
balance the bed. The screen in front of the window would be moveable and
slide behind the stationary screen. These could be made of decorative
fabric, wallpaper, or hand painted murals.
