ALL ABACO REGATTA 1999
by Charlene Côté
The All Abaco Regatta & Homecoming has mushroomed into the largest social activity
in Abaco's calendar year. Under sunny skies, moderate winds and perfect turquoise
waters, Abaco staged its first All Abaco Family Island Regatta in October 1997. The
attendance was nothing short of a major regatta. It ranked among the top family island regattas
in 1997 and last year's regatta was an even greater success. Under the theme 'A Tribute
to the Legends', a record number of vessels participated.
Regatta '99 promises to be the most exciting and keenly contested regatta of the century.
The regatta curtain for this century will fall on Abaco. This final family island
regatta is scheduled for the breathtaking, enchanting and charming harbour between
Green Turtle Cay and the Treasure Cay ferry dock. Regatta '99 will span a four day
period: 27th-30th October. The committee dubbed this year's showdown as 'Regatta
Fever - A Chapter Closed'.
This year's regatta celebrations promise to be the crowning glory of all regattas
for this century. The pre-millennium regatta is of special significance as the committee
proposes to crown the King and Queen of Regatta Abaco, closing out an entire century
of sloop sailing in The Bahamas.
The committee, under the able chairmanship of Island Administrator Everette Hart,
recently appointed a special committee to coordinate its onshore activities. This
year's cultural break through is designed to showcase the best of Abaco's talents
and Bahamian cuisine.
Youth will feature prominently in this year's regatta and youth sloop sailing will
be given special attention on Wednesday 27th October. The usual classes of vessels,
namely A, B and C, will be highlighted. Take home monetary packages will again be
attractive and trophies and cups will be presented to winners. The Governor-General and Prime
Minister cups again lead the many prizes.
Abaconians and residents again look forward with great anticipation to hosting another
memorable event. Committee members are geared up and prepared to close this chapter
in style, elegance and charm as only Abaco can.
