ABACO TOURIST OFFICE UPDATE

A meeting was held on 27th April to discuss plans for the Bonefish National Championships to be hosted in Abaco in July. Guides and lodges represented at the meeting were updated on pending legislation for certification and licensing within the industry. It was noted that the proposed date for the championship (26th-28th July) may present some challenges as it is a mere few days before the beginning of the lobster season. Many guides may be unable to assist with the nationals as they are likely to be preoccupied with preparations for lobster fishing. It was suggested that the date be moved to one week earlier.

Twenty-six tour operators from Italy, Germany and the United States who attended this year's International Travel Partner's Conference held at the Marriott Crystal Palace, Nassau, visited Abaco 12th-13th May. The tour operators were able to visit Marsh Harbour, Hope Town, Treasure Cay and Green Turtle Cay. On Friday evening a mini trade show took place with the participation of local hoteliers as well as the Cove Hotel of Gregory Town, Eleuthera. They were hosted to a cocktail reception with live entertainment by Impact, a local Abaco band, which the tour operators enjoyed very much. Dinner followed and remarks were given by Nettica Symonette, President of the Out Island Promotion Board; Manny Alexiou, Owner of Abaco Beach resort; Donnajeane Turnquest of the Promotion Board; and Wynsome Ferguson of the Abaco Tourist Office.

Graham Johnson, editor of OAG Gazetters based in London, England, visited Abaco on 13th May to conduct a spot check of various hotels throughout the islands for their upcoming publication. Mr Johnson had the opportunity to see hotels in Marsh Harbour, Treasure Cay and Green Turtle Cay.
