ATLANTIS CHIT-CHAT
by Jean Buchanan
It is very, very quiet in Atlantis now. As David and I take our evening stroll there
are not many lights on. Actually, as I write this on 12th May, Buildings #1, 2 and
3 are empty. Our permanent resident Raymond Pearlson in in Miami, Maureen Baldus
just returned to Germany, and Rusy and Gina Bender left for Colorado. Building #4 is presently
the busiest. Robert Drouin is here from Montreal, Bob Kelp from Florida, and my David
and I plan to be here for at least another month. Hopefully we'll get some fishing in. Our boat hasn't been used much this winter.
This has been a very strange season and we are still blaming El Niño. In January we
were supposed to get about two inches of rain and got over twenty. So far in May
we've had one inch of rain, the first for many weeks. Everything has been turning
brown; even the hibiscus are losing their leaves. It has also been very windy, with rough seas
and high humidity.
The only Atlantis eager fisherman left did get in some nice fishing recently. Raymond
caught some beautiful silkies while David caught a 200+ lb blue marlin which was
tagged and released. If he had been in the TC Tournament he would have won $20,000!
Richard Prince caught a sailfish which was also tagged and released. Last week David was
fishing with Jerry Hill and Frank Kay. They caught some nice strawberry grouper.
Frank caught a blue marlin which was released, and David caught a nice wahoo.
The 15th Annual Billfish Tournament is on at present. Quite a few of the fish have
been tagged and released. Besides billfish, they have caught quite a few dolphin,
wahoo and tuna. It goes to show the fush are out there. We just need calm seas to
go get them.
At present most of the Atlantis docks are empty. Nancy and Woody McKay purchased Carolyn
and John Davis's house, so they moved around the corner and John and Carolyn returned
to Nashville. They plan on doing lots of travelling. We'll miss them. Hopefully they'll come back and visit.
During the past month we were happy to see Ann Bachman for the first time in several
years. Hopefully she won't stay away so long this time. Jochen and Coni Rang with
son Justin - also from England - came for a couple of weeks. Justin is sure growing
fast. We expect Alex and Susan Palumbo to arrive from Ohio tomorrow. Those of you who weren't
able to be with us this season - we missed you. Haste ye back!
