ABACO TOURIST OFFICE UPDATE

Karen Hastings, a freelance writer with the Reed Travel group, accompanied by her husband, Brian Hastings, who is a professional photographer, visited Abaco between 15th-25th April. The Hastings are on assignment for Star Service, a directory containing detailed descriptions of some 10,000 hotels worldwide. This book is widely used by travel agents and corporate travel planners throughout North America. While on Abaco they had the opportunity to visit hotels in Marsh Harbour, Dundas Town, Hope Town, Guana Cay, Man O' War Cay, Casuarina Point, Green Turtle Cay and Treasure Cay.

A group of 13 students and three teachers of C I Gibson High School, Nassau, visited Abaco 16th-18th April. The Abaco Tourist Office assisted them with accommodation and transportation as well as putting together an itinerary of the historical sites and points of interest on Abaco. The students had an opportunity to visit Marsh Harbour, Dundas Town, Murphy Town, Hope Town, Casuarina Point, Treasure Cay and Green Turtle Cay.

Mr & Mrs James Martin of the UK visited Abaco 18th-26th April. Mr Martin has fished all around the world and is well known within fishing circles. he was on Abaco to record material for six radio programmes called "At the Water's Edge" and is in the process of writing a new book on fishing. The Martins visited Hope Town, Marsh Harbour, Different of Abaco, Treasure Cay and Green Turtle Cay.

Rob Haynes, General Manager North America & Caribbean, premier Holidays of the UK, visited Abaco on 20th and 21st April. Premier Holidays is a medium sized UK tour operator who are very keen to reintroduce The Bahamas to their North American product. While Mr Haynes was on Abaco he had the opportunity to visit hotels in Marsh Harbour, Hope Town, Green Turtle Cay and Treasure Cay.

A group of 12 journalists with French TV (Canal 2), escorted by Nicole Jacquemin of BTO France, were on Abaco 25th-26th April. The purpose of the trip was to show and interview Umberto Palizzaro (world champion free diving) who was visiting Marsh Harbour aboard the Ocean Explorer. They also took the opportunity to film a six hours series documentary film produced by Tele Images and Canal 2. This series has already been bought by approximately 60 countries around the world and will be shown next fall in France, Italy and Germany before being shown in other countries.

Dale Pusching, Product Director of Signature Vacations out of Toronto, visited Abaco 27th-30th April. Ms Pusching was here enquiring into the possibility of her company starting a direct flight service from Toronto into Treasure Cay.

A Film Industry Fam Trip, escorted by Darlene Davis, took place on Abaco 2nd and 3rd May. The group consisted of the following persons, who were scouting for locations to shoot their respective movies:
Ron Von Schemmelmann - Productions Executive Head, Paramount Studios TV "Islands" TV series in development for winter 1998;
Eric Beg - Producer, Kingsgate Films "Continental Drift" in development for 1998;
Bob Guichard - Producer, Aquaventure Productions "Into the Blues" in development;
Steve Linweaver - Locations Manager/Set Designer, Warner Bros "The Incredible Mr Limpet" in development for 1998/9.
The group had an opportunity to visit the Marsh Harbour area, Casuarina Point, Hope Town, Treasure Cay and Green Turtle Cay. According to Mr Linweaver, it is likely that the movie "The Incredible Mr Limpet" would be filmed in Green Turtle Cay.
