CHURCH PRESENTS PASTOR WITH NEW CAR
On Sunday 24th April, more than 300 members and followers of the Church of God Cathedral
Coopers Town presented Bishop Archilus W Cooper, Pastor of the church, with a new
$40,000 Ford Crown Victoria sedan. The gift was a present to the Bishop in celebration of his 15th pastoral anniversary and was the first time in the island's history
that a congregation has exhibited their appreciation and love for a servant of God
in this manner.
Bishop Cooper, who is also the District Overseer for the Churches of God on Abaco,
the first Abaconian to occupy this office, was made a pastor on 19th February 1984,
replacing the former Bishop Calvin S Saunders, who served as a pastor for over 30
years.
Under Bishop Cooper's pastoralship the Church of God Cathedral's membership had grown
from 76 in 1984 to 184 in 1999, an increase of 137%. It is now a fully air-conditioned
cathedral with added seating balconies, mission quarters, added restroom facilities, acquired land titles for expansion purposes, a pre-school and a newly launched radio
outreach programme.
Bishop Cooper, who also served as District Youth Director for the Churches of God
Abaco District from 1966 to 1984, some 18 years, is the founder of the now annual
District Youth Convention for the Churches of God in Abaco.
