ALTON LOWE 31st ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION
Oil paintings of colourful plants that heal and provide nourishment set a soothing
tone in this year's one-man exhibition by Bahamian artist Alton R Lowe. Herbs commonly
used in Bahamian bush medicine, as well as edible fruits and berries, augment one
of the artist's most versatile presentations in this 31st consecutive show.
Other detailed and realistic works depicting island architecture, people and scenery,
for which Mr Lowe has become renowned, are masterfully balanced in this year's unusual
collection. Native plants that are staples in Bahamian life blend easily with other island scenes of people at work and play in a backdrop of vibrant colours. The artist's
lifelong dedication to preservation and his sensitivity to harmony in nature are
strongly in evidence in this first exhibition of the new millennium.
Born on Green Turtle Cay, Mr Lowe studied in Miami and New York before establishing
himself among the most prominent and popular of Bahamian artists. His work appears
around the globe in numerous publications, in private collections and on Bahamian
postage stamps. As an active historian and environmental preservationist, he founded the
Albert Lowe Museum and was instrumental in establishing the Loyalist Memorial Sculpture
Garden, both in New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay. His gallery adjacent to his home
on the island has also been the site of exhibits as well as special educational and cultural
events over the past few years.
From 25th-29th March the Nassau Beach Hotel will play host to Alton Lowe's 31st annual
one-man exhibition. The exhibition of paintings will be open to the public from 10
am to 7 pm daily. A special "by invitation" preview takes place Friday evening, 24th
March.
