HOMEOWNERS' HOTLINE
by Edna Lacey

John and I returned to Treasure Cay from Christmas in Minnesota on 12th January to some of the best January weather we could recall. There were many dear friends and homeowners in residence who had stayed for the holidays. Among them were Dave and Ellie Bailey, Bruce and Doreen Barth, Judy Beck, Bill and Margaret Cary, Ron and Hilary Cole, Jean English, Buddy Gerald and Linda, Bill Hertz, recently returned from yet another cruise, Ron and Astrid Jackson, Noel and Sylvia Lister, Everett and Ella Pinder, Pete and Molly Plumb, Bill and Betty Richardson, Jerry and Rosemary Roberts, Egon and Beate Schnabel, Jane Schor, George and Carolyn Stern, Cynthia and Paul Vernall, Alex and Helen von Svoboda, and Ron and Jackie Wilson.

Ellie had a 14-year-old replacement hip replaced last summer, and it popped out of its socket at the end of January. True their incredibly good reputation and capabilities, Ron and Jackie Wilson had Ellie and Dave on a jet to West Palm Beach and in hospital there in very short order. I'm glad to tell you that Ellie is back among us, fully repaired, and enjoying Treasure Cay to the fullest. Egon and Beate, along with the Sterns and the Regans who came back to Treasure Cay just a few days beforehand, recently returned from a festive, fun-filled few days in Freeport. I can tell you that reliable sources report they returned poorer but, sadly, no wiser than when they left. Pete and Molly have grins from ear to ear. They have sold their Treasure Cay home, reluctantly, for health reasons, and within a few days bought a winter residence they fell in love with at first sight, near Fort Pierce, Florida. No doubt their private pilot friends will fond good reason to stop off and visit them when in transit between Treasure Cay and the mainland.

Ella Pinder's eye problem, after many months of pain and surgery, is reportedly greatly improved. Out prayers for your full recovery are being answered, Ella. Jane Schor came home in mid January and seems to be fully recovered from her two knee surgeries. It's great to see your smiling face around Treasure Cay again, Jane. Welcome home!

Bill and Betty Richardson have had an eventful few months: a mixture of great joy and greater sorrow. Following the death in December of Betty's sister, Mary Jean, they celebrated a joyous Christmas here with around twenty members of their immediate family, only to be called back Stateside shortly thereafter to mourn the passing of Betty's only remaining sibling, Dick Englehard, on 21st January, aged 72. We also learned, with great sorrow, that Ron and Jackie's daughter, Lisa, has been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, following in the footsteps of her sister, Tina. The good news is that both ladies are doing well.

Among those who returned about the same time as us were Woody and Betsy Bracey, Tom and Helen Bourne, Bob and Trudy Collins, Isik and Erica Erim, Bill and Myrna Floyd, Frank and Patty Kay, Noel and Sylvia Lister, Nelson and Patty Radwan, Jerry and Helen Shelly, Dairell and Anna Snapp, and Brian and Nadine Sheehy. Roy and Audrey Baker-Romain were here for a few weeks and are now back in England.

The Braceys have completed their move from Royal Palm to Bill Hertz's former home on Windward Beach. January was a very busy time for them both, especially because Woody was at the same time organising the Sand Bank Yacht Club social programme for 1999. The Bournes, having sold their Windward Beach home last year, are happily ensconced in Villa 624 and will be with us until mid March. Bill and Myrna will be with us for the winter. As I write, Bill is bird hunting in Argentina but will be back with us soon. Frank and Patty Kay, along with Judy beck and Jean English, spent a couple of weeks cruising the Mediterranean at the beginning of February and got back, happy but exhausted, just in time for the Sand Bank Yacht Club Valentine's Day party.

Nelson and Patty arrived in mid January immediately after the horse sales in their home town of Lexington, Kentucky. We are greatly saddened to report that their niece has been diagnosed with breast cancer, little more than a year after her mother, Nelson's sister, was taken from us by the same affliction. Our prayers are with you and your family, Nelson and Patty. the Shellys and Sheehes plan to stay until May. They worked very hard all year to assure an outstanding Yacht Club programme and it was good to see both couples looking so well, so relieved, and so relaxed.

The floodgates of those returning from spending the holidays off the island have since opened wide. The list includes Bill Bulger, John and Margaret Bahen, Nancy Darnell, Peter and Vivienne Van de Weil, and Bill and Dorothy Rodgers. Welcome back to all of you! Bill Bulger left on 13th February for a month in Australia and New Zealand to visit family there. John and Margaret will host a gala dinner party at their home on 12th March, the total proceeds of which will benefit the Abaco Scholarship Fund, thanks to John and Margaret's outstanding generosity. For those of you not familiar with the Fund, its purpose is to assist able Bahamian students with their post-secondary school education.

I continue to need input from all Treasure Cay homeowners, so please call and let me hear of your happenings - large and small.
