SAND BANK YACHT CLUB
102 members of Sand Bank Yacht Club and 14 guests attended its 27th Change of Watch
on 24th January at the Spinnaker Restaurant, Treasure Cay. Past Commodore, Commodore,
Vice Commodore and Rear Commodore for 1999 are Brian Sheehe, John Lacey, Bill Floyd,
and Gerry Shelly, all of whom moved up from their 1998 positions. The incoming Fleet
Captain is Woody Bracey. Nelson Radwan remains the Club's Treasurer.
After cocktails on the patio, members enjoyed a champagne dinner lovingly prepared
by Head Chef Elliot Sawyer and his kitchen staff, expertly served by Headwaiter Vernon
Russell and his team. The menu was shrimp scampi, minestrone soup, tropical sherbet,
choice of beef tenderloin or duck á l'orange, and Key lime pie.
During their review of 1998, Brian Sheehe and Gerry Shelly thanked members for their
help. They singled out Helen Shelly and Cynthia and Paul Vernall for special mention
and thanked John and Margaret Bahen, Bruce and Doreen Barth, David and Jean Buchanan,
Bill Bulger, Barbara Farnan, Bill Floyd, Pat and Carolynn Kingsford, Marge Janke,
John and Edna Lacey, Tom and Peggy Larder, Gae and Mike Meeson, Nelson Radwan and
Nadine Sheehe for their work during the year. Brian oversaw the passing of the flags
from last year's to this year's officers then turned his watch over to John Lacey, who presented
Brian with his Past Commodore cap and pin and lauded Brian's outstanding service
to the Club to well-deserved standing applause.
Woody Bracey outlined the programme for 1999: St Valentine's Day Dinner & Dance on
Sunday 14th February; boat trip to Green Turtle Cay Club for lunch on Wednesday 3rd
March; golf cart and Easter bonnet parade, competitions and brunch at the Spinnaker
on Easter Sunday, 4th April; boating excursion to Nippers on Great Guana Cay with pig roast
on Wednesday 21st April; Guy Fawkes' Day beach bonfire party on Friday 5th November;
Pizza Party at the Tipsy Seagull on Wednesday 1st December; and the New Millennium
Change of Watch Dinner on Wednesday 26th January 2000.
Woody then described an idea called Random Rendezvous, in which the Club will act
as a catalyst to encourage informal member and guest gatherings for boating activities
and specific places and times. February Random Rendezvous events included Bluff House
lunch followed by gunkholing on No Name Cay at noon on Monday 8th February, and Manjack
Cay picnic and nature preserve exploration at noon on Monday 22nd February. March
Random Rendezvous events will be Shell Island shelling and picnicking at noon on
Wednesday 17th March, and a Baker's Cay picnic at 11 am on Saturday 27th March followed
by fishing off Guana Cay reef.
John Lacey thanked the staff of the Spinnaker Restaurant for their contribution to
a great evening, then declared the Club's 27th Change of Watch at an end.
