BEHEMOTH AT WORK
There's a behemoth at work in Treasure Cay, one that can grind casuarina trees into
dust in a matter of seconds. Called a tub grinder, the mighty machine is fed by three
loading machines and a clipper. The clipper can cut through trees 24 inches in diameter, then slice the trunks up into manageable lengths. Trunks and branches are delivered
to the tub grinder which feeds itself through an integral crane. The debris is dropped
into the grinder, rotating drum, and comes out on a conveyer belt in the form of
very fine chips.
The venture started three months ago when residents realised that the downed casuarinas
left prostrate by Hurricane Floyd were not only unsightly, they posed a serious fire
hazard. Assisted financially by Treasure Cay Ltd, the residents were able to rent
the equipment for what is expected to be a 12 week period at an estimated cost of $450,000.
Work started on 20th March.
The ground-up casuarina trees make a good mulch and anyone who wants a truckload or
two only has to find the behemoth at work and get filled up.
